Council Defectors should all resign

I have always believed that politics is about values and ideas . In Britain MPs and councillors are elected to represent distinctive ideas and philosophies. Although over time you may build up a “personal vote” most of us would never be elected as independents. We have a party based system for good reason.

However there must be something strange in the water in the River Roding and its tributaries because there have been a spate of defections by Redbridge Councillors over recent months. First it was a group of four Conservatives who left to become “independents” and now three individuals elected as Labour councillors have left the Labour group - two who had failed to get through the reselection process organised by the London Regional Party have joined the Liberal Democrats and one who had not even tried to be re-selected has announced that he is joining the Conservatives.

Two weeks ago the leader of the Conservatives in Redbridge and Leader of the Council Councillor Keith Prince said that councillors who left the party under which they had been elected should all resign and force by-elections. He was right then and as I agree with him I hope that Councillor Prince will now be refusing to accept former Labour Councillor Radford into his group….

In India when there was a major problem of defections and political turncoats they adopted a law to prevent people crossing the floor- perhaps we need one here too !
