Israel and the United Nations

I appreciate the points that have been raised by the Israel-Britain Alliance about the frequency of Israel being the focus of resolutions passed by UN bodies compared with other countries. Indeed, the UK Mission to the UN has expressly raised this at the Human Rights Council.

As a longstanding friend of Israel we the United Kingdom have a close relationship in many areas, from trade and investment, to technology, innovation and security. and I am personally a member of Labour Friends of Israel.

I share the frustration and disappointment expressed by many at the lack of progress towards a two-state solution that recognises the importance of security and stability, and guarantees a viable and secure future for both Israelis and Palestinians. This will require all sides to avoid taking action that makes peace harder to achieve. The UK supported UN Security Council resolution 2334 last year which emphasised both of these points.

I will continue to urge the Government to press for an immediate return to meaningful negotiations and to fully back all initiatives focused on a diplomatic resolution.
