London Labour MPs write to PM urging Heathrow expansion go ahead

8 London Labour MPs have written to the Prime Minister urging for Heathrow expansion to be given the go-ahead. The letter is the latest example of the growing political, business and local support for expansion.

In the letter the MPs cite the significant job and economic benefit creation for London (up to 40,000 jobs and £35 billion) as well as Heathrow’s acceptance of the Airports Commission environmental conditions, as key reasons to green light expansion at the UK’s hub airport.

Part of the letter reads, “As well as creating up to 40,000 jobs and £35 billion of economic growth across the capital alone, Heathrow has accepted and exceeded the Airports Commissions conditions, confirming that a new privately-funded runway delivers for both the economy and the environment. As London MPs we have been clear that expansion must not come at any cost and Heathrow’s revised proposals ensure a fair deal for all of London.”

“We cannot afford to delay this decision any longer. With the support of local residents around the airport, big and small businesses, trade unions and a majority of MPs, you can be confident that green-lighting Heathrow is the right choice for London.”

The 8 MPs:

Jim Fitzpatrick MP
Mike Gapes MP
David Lammy MP
Siobhain McDonagh MP
Gareth Thomas MP
Stephen Timms MP
Virendra Sharma MP
Wes Streeting MP

The full letter reads:

Dear Prime Minister,

For centuries, the world’s largest port or international airport has been in London. Last year we lost that crown to Dubai. Even amongst our European neighbours, our competitive advantage is being gradually eroded. Outside the EU, we must not be left relying on the ports of our competitors such as Schiphol and Charles de Gaulle to connect us to long-haul destinations and carry our exports.

After almost three years of analysis on how best to maintain the UK’s position as Europe’s most important aviation hub, the independent Airports Commission was clear and unanimous in its recommendation – expansion at Heathrow is the best solution for the whole country, including London. This is the clear consensus outside the capital. But with new proposals following the referendum to deliver the benefits of extra capacity quicker and cheaper, the London case for expanding Heathrow is stronger than ever.

As well as creating up to 40,000 jobs and £35 billion of economic growth across the capital alone, Heathrow has accepted and exceeded the Airports Commissions conditions, confirming that a new privately-funded runway delivers for both the economy and the environment. As London MPs we have been clear that expansion must not come at any cost and Heathrow’s revised proposals ensure a fair deal for all of London.

We cannot afford to delay this decision any longer. With the support of local residents around the airport, big and small businesses, trade unions and a majority of MPs, you can be confident that green-lighting Heathrow is the right choice for London.

In your conference speech, you made it clear that “the Britain we build after Brexit – is going to be a global Britain”. Nowhere is this more important than in London. A decision for Heathrow is also a commitment to keep London as one of the great, open global cities – to make London stronger and able to trade with all the new and emerging markets of the world. We thrive as a global hub for talent, trade and transport. If we fail to invest in our hub airport – our gateway to the world – then we are destined to fall behind.
