Thank you to my constituents in Ilford South. I am humbled and honoured by my largest ever vote, 43,724, largest vote share, 75.8%, and biggest ever majority of 31,647. Congratulations to Wes Streeting too on his magnificent victory in Ilford North.
Theresa May called the early election as a referendum on herself, and her plans for a hard Brexit. But the "Strong and Stable " leader cult was found out. Her personal manifesto fell apart in just a few days. Our Weak and Wobbly Prime Minister lost her majority, and is dependent on a grubby coalition of chaos with the Northern Ireland Democratic Unionist Party.
Labour had a very good united, positive campaign on a manifesto collectively agreed by the National Executive Committee representing all wings of the Party, including Labour MPs. It was popular and costed. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn greatly exceeded expectations of many, including myself. He engaged with and enthused many in public meetings and rallies. Labour won support amongst young people and students, who voted in record numbers. Labour did much better than in 2015.
We won the campaign. But we did not win the election. There are 650 MPs. Labour now has 262. We still have a minority pro -austerity Conservative government. Locally, I campaigned on the NHS, Education, Housing, Transport, and Security. I made clear my support for our country to stay in the Single Market. They will be my priorities in the coming months. But I expect another General Election within a year.
