Mike Gapes writes to Jeremy Corbyn regarding Redbridge Momentum

Mike Gapes MP (Ilford South) has written to Jeremy Corbyn MP about the falsehoods and defamatory statements being made by his Redbridge Momentum supporters group.

Full text of the letter has been provided below:

Jeremy Corbyn MP
Leader of the Opposition
House of Commons
London, SW1A 0AA

26th August 2016

Dear Jeremy,

I understand that Redbridge Momentum (redbridgemomentum.org) has recently been established to support your leadership campaign.

I am most concerned that the website of this organisation contains a false and defamatory statement about me. It says: “Mike Gapes voted consistently for the Bedroom Tax”.

In fact as you are well aware I voted with my Labour colleagues against the Bedroom Tax when it was debated in 2011 to 2014.

Indeed the They Work For You website confirms this and says: “Mike Gapes generally voted against reducing housing benefit for social tenants deemed to have excess bedrooms”.

I am prepared to stand by my record and all my actual votes in parliament. But I am very disappointed that your supporters are spreading falsehoods about my record.

I ask you to instruct your Redbridge Momentum supporters to immediately take down this inaccurate website.

I am copying this letter to the General Secretary of the Labour Party so he can consider whether any disciplinary action arises. I am also making this letter public so my constituents are aware of the truth.

Mike Gapes
Labour and Co-operative
Member of Parliament for Ilford South
