I have been leading the campaign to defend services at our local hospital since the first plans to close A&E and maternity services at King George Hospital were put forward in 2006.
Our initial pubic campaign against the closures and transfer of services to Queens Hospital, Romford was successful.
However, in October 2011 Andrew Lansley, the Conservative Secretary of State for Health, agreed to the closure of both A&E and maternity services at King George Hospital. The maternity wards were closed in early 2013. However, as a result of service problems at Queen's Hospital they have delayed but not cancelled plans to close the A&E at King George Hospital.
Recently I joined hundreds of local residents in a march and rally protesting against these plans and called on Jeremy Hunt, the current Conservative Secretary of State for Health, to formally state that he will reverse the decision to close A&E at King George’s Hospital. In July 2017 I again raised the issue of King George Hospital in Parliament during an Adjournment debate on King George Hospital.
I will continue to work for accessible, good quality local healthcare for Ilford’s residents and support the campaign to keep A&E at King George Hospital.
