Thank you to those who recently contacted me about President Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, of the relocation of the US Embassy from Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem and the related Early Day Motion 665.
I share your frustration about President Trump's announcement, one which has reversed decades of US policy on this sensitive issue.
I strongly support a two-state settlement that establishes a viable and secure Palestinian state alongside a secure and internationally recognised Israel. I believe that the British Government should be working internationally at the United Nations and through the European Union to support renewed negotiations to achieve this.
I consider the construction of Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian land in the West Bank and East Jerusalem to be illegal and unjustifiable. I oppose all illegal settlement activity.
I agree that the blockade on Gaza should be lifted by both Egypt and Israel and there should be urgent humanitarian access to Gaza.
There can be no military solution to this conflict and I believe that all sides must avoid taking action that would make peace harder to achieve. That means both an end to the blockade, occupation and settlements, and an end to rocket and terror attacks. I, along with my colleagues, will continue to press for an immediate return to meaningful negotiations leading to a diplomatic resolution.
I have now signed EDM 665 and I can assure you that I will continue to press the UK Government to work with the international community in delivering a peaceful solution, and in reversing the damage and impact of President Trump's decision.
